SCOTTS FORECASTS FISCAL THIRD QUARTER SALES INCREASE OF ABOUT 17.5 PERCENT

MARYSVILLE, Ohio, June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The Scotts Company (NASDAQ: SCTT) announced today that it expects to report sales for the third fiscal quarter ended July 3, 1993, of approximately $153 million, an increase of about 17.5 percent over last year's fiscal third quarter sales of $130 million.
The company expects to report actual third quarter results on or about Aug. 11, 1993.
The estimated results announced today would bring nine-months 1993 sales to approximately $382 million, up about 11.5 percent from $343 million in last year's comparable period.
The 18 percent rebound in third quarter sales is a substantial improvement over the 7 percent rate Scotts experienced in the second quarter, which was affected by severe winter weather. While the company experienced approximately a 36 percent surge in April sales, it has seen a similar slowdown in consumer spending as that recently reported by some of the nation's leading retailers.
Tadd C. Seitz, Scotts' chairman and chief executive officer, said: "In the fourth quarter, we will be building on a number of new promotional programs that had impressive initial success last year, including new fall season products, regional products, and tailored fall season promotional programs with leading retailers. However, if the slower than anticipated retail sales trend experienced in May and June continues, we expect to be at the low end of the 12 - 15 percent sales growth target we have set for the year."
With sales over $400 million in fiscal 1992, Scotts is the country's leading producer and marketer of consumer do-it-yourself lawn care and professional golf course turf care products. The company's Turf Builder(R) products are the nation's most popular lawn care fertilizers and fertilizer/control combinations. The company's Hyponex(R) products are the nation's leading line of organic products, including top soils, potting soils, composted manures and bark mulches. Through Republic Tool & Manufacturing Company, Scotts offers a full line of lawn spreaders and other lawn and garden equipment under the "EZ" label and under retailers' private brands.
