ORLANDO, Fla., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Learning Company (NASDAQ: LRNG) and ScottForesman today announced their joint partnership in the "Celebrate Reading!" program as an exciting new way to make technology serve the reading classroom. Using "The Children's Writing & Publishing Center," "The Writing Center," and "The Bilingual Writing Center," this series provides grade-appropriate activities and graphics correlated to "Celebrate Reading!," as well as teacher's guides, home- involvement templates disks and a theme-related graphics library. Available for the Apple II, Macintosh and IBM computers, the series may be purchased separately through ScottForesman, starting September 1993.
Incorporating elements of a real literature approach to reading, the "Celebrate Reading!" program is an advancement in reading instruction with its innovation in approach and content for grades K-8. Through multiple anthology sets, developmentally appropriate themes, and unadapted literature, this program invites all kids to explore the magic and poetry of words and stories. Using literature from the widest variety of genres and cultures, students can explore a single anthology theme they really care about such as "meeting challenges." With The Learning Company's writing tools, they can create innovative newsletters, stories, certificates and activity sheets illustrated with pictures from the "Celebrate Reading!" anthologies. Then, these can be sent home with the children to be shared with their families.
"We chose The Learning Company's writing tools as ideal programs for use with 'Celebrate Reading!' because the programs are easy to use and provide powerful features for both students and teachers, especially the incorporation of sophisticated color graphics," said Dee Lee, vice president, educational technology at ScottForesman. "It was also important to us that the programs we selected be available on all the platforms in use in the schools. We share The Learning Company's philosophy of supporting all teachers in their efforts to incorporate technology into the curriculum," she continued.
"We know that this partnership offers teachers the best of both worlds, print-based and technology-based solutions. Teachers and students will benefit because of our joint commitment to provide innovative and high-quality products for the education market," said Bill Dinsmore, president and chief executive officer of The Learning Company.
"The Children's Writing & Publishing Center," "The Writing Center," and "The Bilingual Writing Center" (Spanish/English) help children, grades 2 & up, build written communication and creative writing skills. Featuring easy-to-use menus, the programs allow users to combine words and pictures easily, automatically wrap words around pictures placed in documents, cut and paste text, and use multiple font styles and sizes. They also give users the option to choose multi-column formats and to insert pictures chosen from the over 150 pictures and pre-designed headings included with the program. "The Children's Writing & Publishing Center" is used in over 30,000 schools nationwide and is the recipient of the "Program of the Decade, Desktop Publishing" award from Technology & Learning magazine.
