SCOTT SMITH NAMED CHAIRMAN OF MANNINGTON MILLS

SCOTT SMITH NAMED CHAIRMAN OF MANNINGTON MILLS
SALEM, N.J., Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Scott Smith will be named

chairman of Mannington Mills, Inc., according to Ernest L. Ransome III, chairman of the board of directors.
Ransome, who has served as interim chairman since the retirement of John P. Campbell II in August 1991, will resign that position at the April 16 board meeting, where he will announce the appointment of Smith as chairman. Smith, 44, has been with the company for 17 years and currently serves as president and chief executive officer.
Ransome said the appointment of Smith as chairman signifies the solidification of the company's leadership, and demonstrates a commitment to moving forward with the same spirit and enthusiasm that has led Mannington to record-breaking sales and earnings in 1991.
"There's been a lot of speculation about the effect that Tom McAndrew's resignation will have on the future health of our business," Ransome said.
"With the combination of Scott's considerable leadership and strength, as well as the aggressive marketing, research and manufacturing initiatives already in high gear, I think what everyone will see is the emergence of an even stronger and more competitive Mannington in the future."
Smith, a 1969 graduate of Stanford University, said the conflicts created between the "old guard and the new guard" will serve to make Mannington better than ever.
"I hired Tom three years ago because I knew he had what we needed to revitalize our resilient business. He had the drive, the spirit and the vision to bring about cultural change that would carry us successfully into the next century," Smith said.
"The cultural change is under way, and the vision is firmly in place. Tom's departure has played a pivotal role in settling an internal disagreement that now leaves us completely unified for the first time in the pursuit of that vision."
In addition, Smith said Mannington will announce the details of a substantial acquisition in the weeks ahead, as well as an expanded advertising and promotion campaign to debut in late March. Other impending initiatives include: two new residential product introductions this fall, and a commercial vinyl tile introduction supported by the opening of a new plant scheduled for early 1993.
Mannington Mills, Inc. is one of the largest floor covering manufacturers in the country, with more than 2,500 employees in the United States and Canada. The company is the only flooring manufacturer that sells ceramic tile, carpet, wood and resilient floors. Recently, Mannington expanded its commercial division by teaming up with a Japanese conglomerate, Takiron Co., LTD., to license their technology in the United States and generate American jobs right here at home.
