SCIMED TO SET UP RESERVE FOR JAPAN INVENTORY REPURCHASE

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- SCIMED Life Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: SMLS) announced today that it will establish a reserve for repurchase of inventory from its Japanese distributor. As previously announced on July 30, 1993, SCIMED is setting up a direct sales operation in Japan which is expected to be in place on Jan. 1, 1994.
During the transition phase, SCIMED continues to sell products to its Japanese distributor, but to accomplish a smooth transition has agreed to repurchase inventory held by that distributor at Dec. 31, 1993. The company will set up a reserve against orders from the Japanese distributor for the period from Aug. 1, 1993, through Dec. 31, 1993. This is expected to reduce revenues for the second quarter ended Aug. 31, 1993, by approximately $2-1/2 million.
The company is on schedule in staffing its sales subsidiary in Japan, and has hired Masashi Yamamoto as general manager. Mr. Yamamoto has 17 years of experience with Baxter International in senior sales and marketing positions in cardiovascular businesses. The company has filled the senior management positions in sales, finance, and regulatory affairs, and has begun to establish its direct sales organization.
SCIMED Life Systems, Inc. develops, manufactures and markets disposable medical devices, principally coronary and peripheral angioplasty products, for non-surgical treatment of cardiovascular disease. SCIMED's shares are traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol SMLS.
