SCIMED ANNOUNCES PLANS TO ESTABLISH A DIRECT SALES ORGANIZATION IN JAPAN

MINNEAPOLIS, July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- SCIMED Life Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: SMLS) announced today that it has terminated its distributor agreement and has entered into a transition agreement with Japan Lifeline, Inc. of Japan to establish a direct sales organization in Japan by the end of this calendar year.
Dale A. Spencer, president and chief executive officer, commented, "Strengthening SCIMED's international market position is an important priority for SCIMED. Our decision to go direct in Japan is significant because it currently represents the largest angioplasty market outside the United States. Japan Lifeline was SCIMED's largest distributor last year.
"Although converting to a direct sales operation in a market as complex and as large as Japan involves some risks and will require some up-front investments, we believe that it is an important step in developing SCIMED's worldwide markets and in strengthening the company's strategic position long term."
SCIMED Life Systems, Inc. develops, manufactures and markets disposable medical devices, principally coronary and peripheral angioplasty products, for non-surgical treatment of cardiovascular disease. SCIMED's shares are traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol SMLS.
