SCIMED ANNOUNCES NEW PTCA GUIDE WIRE SYSTEM

MINNEAPOLIS, July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- SCIMED Life Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMLS) announced today that it has received FDA clearance to market a unique PTCA guide wire system designed to facilitate the exchange of over-the-wire PTCA balloon catheters. The company is preparing to launch this system, comprised of the EnTre(TM) II guide wire and the MAGNET(TM) exchange device, within the next few months.
The patent-pending EnTre II guide wire and the MAGNET exchange device combination incorporates the use of magnets to maintain the position of the guide wire in the coronary artery during removal, insertion, or exchange of either over-the-wire or rapid/single-operator exchange balloon catheters. Current approaches to balloon catheter exchange utilize "extension" wires, 300 cm long "exchange" wires or "rapid/single-operator exchange" catheter designs.
Dale A. Spencer, president and chief executive officer, commented, "The MAGNET exchange device is functional only with the EnTre II guide wire. Together, they result in a proprietary system which is designed to strengthen our position in the important coronary angioplasty guide wire market and to provide cardiologists with more choices in accomplishing single-operator catheter exchanges. Of course, it is too soon to predict how well or how quickly this system may be accepted by physicians, particularly those who use single-operator exchange catheters."
SCIMED Life Systems, Inc. develops, manufactures, and markets disposable medical devices, principally coronary and peripheral angioplasty products, for non-surgical treatment of cardiovascular disease. SCIMED's shares are traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol SMLS.
