SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA TO DEMONSTRATE 4 MPEG-BASED, DIGITAL VIDEO COMPRESSED SIGNALS OVER SINGLE DS-3 CIRCUIT AT SUPERCOMM SHOW APRIL 19-22

ATLANTA, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA), the leader in broadband communications delivery systems for the cable television industry, will demonstrate the compatibility and effectiveness of its digital video compression system over standard telecommunications facilities this week at Supercomm '93 in Atlanta.
The demonstration in Booth 1947 will show MPEG-based compression over coaxial cable, a DS-3 circuit and AM fiber-optic equipment. "This compatibility demonstration will be accomplished using Scientific- Atlanta's new DS-3 video multiplexer, Model D9700TM, which can be used over any terrestrial link such as interexchange networks," said Ron Foster, vice president and general manager of the telecom products division of Scientific-Atlanta's Broadband Communications Group.
"We are now installing digital compression systems that are working over satellite," said Foster. Both Viacom International, Inc. and StarNet Inc. have begun to install Scientific-Atlanta compression systems for the entertainment and ad insertion markets respectively.
He added that "Scientific-Atlanta with its Fiber-to-the-Serving Area architecture has developed an integrated services network which can easily accommodate telephone and data services for cable operators and local networks. This will allow operators and programmers an additional method for efficient backhaul of video and audio programming."
The demonstration will consist of four separate MPEG digital video sources being compressed and multiplexed at a Scientific-Atlanta local encoding site in Norcross, Ga. The multiplexed signal will then be sent through the fiber circuit provided by Southern Bell to the Georgia World Congress Center into the Scientific-Atlanta booth where it will be demultiplexed and decompressed. All four signals will be shown in the Scientific-Atlanta booth, and one will also be carried over Scientific- Atlanta's AM fiber-optic equipment and displayed at the booth of DSC Communications Corporation.
Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. is a world leader in broadband communications systems, cable television electronics, satellite-based communications networks and instrumentation for industrial, telecommunications and government applications.
