SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA SETTLES LONG-STANDING CLASS ACTION LITIGATION

ATLANTA, Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA), announced today that it has reached an agreement in principle to settle the Henderson, et al v. Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. securities class action litigation.
The suit, which was filed in 1988, that Scientific-Atlanta related to events which occurred during the early 1980s principally as a result of the difficulties experienced by the company in the production and delivery of a new product. Scientific-Atlanta has continuously denied the allegations in the suit.
The settlement will result in a pre-tax charge to earnings in the second quarter ending Dec. 31, 1993, in the amount of $17.5 million ($0.31 per share after taxes), of which $14 million is the amount payable under the terms of the settlement and the remainder is costs incurred by the company in connection with the suit. Completion of the settlement is subject to approval of the fairness of the settlement by the U.S. District Court after notice to members of the plaintiff class and a hearing.
William E. Eason Jr., general counsel to the company, stated that: "The company firmly believes it fully complied with the law in this matter and that the suit is without merit. However, the settlement of this long-standing litigation at this time is in the best interests of the company's shareholders. It avoids further protracted and costly legal proceedings ai?nates the uncertainty of a jury trial."
