SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA RECEIVES ORDER FROM ADELPHIA FOR NEW SINGLE-PORT INTERDICTION UNITS FOR NEW "CABLE SELECT" SERVICE

ATLANTA, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Adelphia Communications Corporation has ordered single-port Addressable Interdiction equipment from Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA) to launch "Cable Select," an a la carte offering of cable TV service, in all local Adelphia cable systems.
Scientific-Atlanta's new single-port Interdiction units are home powered and will be used by Adelphia to provide maximum choice for subscribers. With Adelphia's "Cable Select" service, subscribers will be able to choose which channels or services they want, when they want them, and will be billed only for that programming.
In addition to "Cable Select," the new Interdiction product has other applications, including broadcast basic tiering.
The system "jams" up to 49 unauthorized signals, including audio, and passes authorized signals directly to a TV set "in the clear" for better picture quality. Interdiction is a completely transparent technology to the subscriber with the equipment installed outside the residence for improved signal security. Control is administered at the headend for easier connects, disconnects and changes in service.
Interdiction offers a number of other advantages including:
-- Increased customer satisfaction because subscribers can easily
use all the features of their cable-ready TVs and VCRs.
-- Eliminates set-top terminals in the home except for non-cable
 ready sets.
-- Compatibility with future digital compression will permit
operators to have an analog tier of services with a layer of
digitally compressed services, such as movie-on-demand.
Earlier this year, Cablevision Systems Corporation also selected Scientific-Atlanta's single port Interdiction product to launch a broadcast basic tier of service to subscribers in about 40 of its systems.
Adelphia Communications Corporation is among the nation's 10 largest multiple cable system operators with 1.2 million total subscribers in nine states.
Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. is a world leader in broadband communications systems, cable television electronics, satellite-based communications networks, and instrumentation for industrial, telecommunications and government applications.
