SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA INTRODUCES SKYRELAY(TM) -- INDUSTRY'S FIRST VSAT SATELLITE SYSTEM DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR INTERNETWORKING

 -- System's frame-relay backbone, flexible LAN support, and bandwidth-optimization package meet needs of client/server computing
 platforms and evolving network architectures --
 ATLANTA, Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA), today introduced SkyRelay, a VSAT satellite system designed for companies moving to distributed computing environments and requiring higher-capacity communications support.
 Scientific-Atlanta officials said SkyRelay is the first VSAT system developed in response to the growing trend toward internetworking by increasing the communications network's speed, performance, and flexibility. SkyRelay will be available for shipment by the end of 1993.
 "Without question, SkyRelay is the industry's first internetworking VSAT system. We expect an enthusiastic response from MIS directors who want to apply the inherent flexibility and reliability of VSAT technology to their LAN client/server environments for high-capacity applications," said Alan L. Freece, vice president, worldwide marketing and sales for Scientific-Atlanta's VSAT product line.
 FLEXIBLE LAN SUPPORT AND BANDWIDTH-OPTIMIZATION PACKAGE AVAILABLE
 The SkyRelay remote VSATs feature Ethernet and Token Ring LAN support, made possible by a convenient LAN interface card Q a product that is, in fact, the only "Brouter" in the VSAT industry, Freece said.
 "SkyRelay's flexible LAN solution makes it the first and only VSAT system to provide both bridging and routing capabilities. SkyRelay supports popular approaches such as source routing, transparent bridging, and IP routing. Each LAN interface card can be custom configured to meet the requirements of the individual user, making it the most flexible LAN solution in the VSAT industry," Freece said.
 Responding to the need for higher capacity and improved performance in today's client/server environment, SkyRelay is equipped with a bandwidth-optimization package that includes bandwidth-on-demand and other key optimization features. The package ensures availability of satellite bandwidth during peak periods and efficiently tailors the system's bandwidth to fit the user's traffic demands.
 STANDARDS-BASED FRAME-RELAY IMPROVES NETWORK EFFICIENCY
 SkyRelay features a standards-based, frame-relay backbone protocol to significantly improve network efficiency. Freece said a VSAT network's inherently high data integrity eliminates the need for extensive error checking that is available with the X.25 protocol. Frame-relay, therefore, gives users greater network efficiency by eliminating unnecessary overhead.
 "We consider the frame-relay protocol to be the emerging protocol standard for packet-switching technologies such as VSAT. Scientific-Atlanta's long-term strategy has been to adhere to industry standards. Our SkylinX.25 product, introduced in 1988, uses X.25 as its network backbone protocol, a CCITT standard. Frame-relay is also ideal for LAN interconnectivity, considering the 'bursty' nature of its traffic," he said.
 He added that SkyRelay will also be able to support standard terrestrial interfaces such as frame-relay or ISDN, giving it the "media-independence" flexibility needed to function in a true hybrid-networking environment.
 NEW HUB ARCHITECTURE SUPPORTED BY COMPREHENSIVE NETWORK OPERATIONS
 SYSTEM
 The SkyRelay hub is modular in design and can be expanded to accommodate the user's need for more capacity. This level of scalability allows users to keep their costs down by growing their hub as their network grows P while at the same time providing users with 1:1 redundancy. This approach to a distributed hub architecture allows users to cost-effectively create sub-networks within their network, either in a shared hub or private hub environment.
 SkyRelay also features a comprehensive network operations system designed to consolidate a network operations center's command and control functions, network performance reporting, traffic analysis tools, and trouble ticketing on a single platform.
 SkyRelay's network operations system operates on a UNIX workstation and was completely re-engineered, from the ground up. "Its design has been based on years of experience managing our own networks and will be used in our own network operations center in Melbourne, Florida," Freece said.
 MARKET FOR SKYRELAY IS LARGE AND EXPANDING
 Freece said companies likely to purchase a SkyRelay system include those in the retail, automotive, distribution, financial services, and travel services industries. He said SkyRelay appeals to fast-growth companies with more than 100 locations that are a client/server environment and adding mission-critical LAN applications to their network P applications such as database access, file manipulation, and large file downloads.
 He said companies considering SkyRelay are also likely to have future plans to add broadcast video and audio communications to their existing data networks.
 Freece concluded: "When you look carefully at the companies that understand the value a VSAT network can add to their business, the overwhelming majority are looking for a communications solution that can support their internetworking traffic up to 256 kbps. That's why we're convinced SkyRelay is the right product at the right time."
