SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA ENTERS INTO THE FIRST JOINT VENTURE IN CHINA TO MANUFACTURE CABLE TV DISTRIBUTION EQUIPMENT

 ATLANTA, April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA) has formed a joint venture with four telecommunications companies in the People's Republic of China for the manufacture of cable TV distribution equipment in Shanghai for the developing Chinese cable market.
 This joint venture will serve the cable industry in China which is expected to grow rapidly. The largest 300 Chinese cities, with 300 million people, 79 million homes passed and 70 percent TV penetration, are expected to begin construction of cable systems in the near future.
 This will transform the country with more cable channels, more programming and increasing cable penetration. In addition, this development will upgrade China's communications infrastructure and allow cable to play a larger role in providing education, information and entertainment for the people.
 Scientific-Atlanta will have majority ownership and operational responsibility for the joint venture. Production is expected to begin within 12 months. The joint venture will be initially capitalized at $10 million with each of the five parties contributing according to their percentage ownership.
 The other joint venture partners are:
 -- Shanghai Optical Fiber Communications Corporation
 -- Shanghai Radio and Television Development Corporation (an arm of
 the Shanghai Broadcast Bureau which owns and operates radio and
 TV stations through the region)
 -- Shanghai Post and Telecommunications Industrial Corporation
 -- Shanghai Jin Ling Company, Ltd.
 The joint venture also includes a marketing agreement for the marketing and sales of cable distribution equipment throughout China.
