SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA DEMONSTRATES FASTEST NETWORK MEASUREMENT SYSTEM AT MTT-S

 ATLANTA, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA) will preview its new network measurement system at the 1993 MTT-S (Microwave Theory and Techniques Society) Exhibition at the Georgia World Congress Center, June 15-17.
 The new system, produced by Scientific-Atlanta's Electronic Systems Division in Atlanta, represents the next generation of flexible, high- volume measurement hardware for testing MMIC (Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits) modules, wafers and other gallium arsenide-based or silicon-based devices.
 Scientific-Atlanta is a leader in high-speed production testing of microwave components. Its Model 2096 measurement system, which serves as the basic configuration for further enhancements, is the fastest system available today for production testing of multi-state devices such as programmable phase shifters, attenuators and radar transmit and receive modules. In one configuration used in the government's ManTech program, the Model 2096 system reduced test times by a factor of more than 10 without any degradation of accuracy.
 Scientific-Atlanta's new network measurement system incorporates much of the technology developed in the Model 2096 system. It can accommodate the measurement of many different device and performance parameters including Radio Frequency (RF), Intermediate Frequency (IF), Direct Current (DC) and control parameters. Measurement of Device- Under-Test (DUT) responses can be accomplished across a specified set of test states including frequency, control parameters, RF power input and output settings, temperature and DC bias conditions.
 The flexibility of the system ensures the widest application, high speed production testing available today by linking a number of instruments through common hardware interfaces under software control.
 In addition, a wide variety of RF and DC measurements can be made including vector or scalar s-parameters, power measurements, noise figure, spectral analysis, compression, intercept and intermodulation levels. Measurement speed is increased by restricting the use of the IEEE-488 bus to instrument initialization and error monitoring.
 Moreover, Scientific-Atlanta has implemented a multi-processing hardware architecture which operates in full coordination with the system's 80486 control processing unit. A Data Acquisition Coprocessor (DAC) is imbedded in the computer and controls the data collection operation completely. Since real-time data collection functions do not burden the 80486 main processor, ample time is available for higher level functions such as real-time data analysis, file management and networking.
 Post acquisition data analysis is an integral part of the Scientific-Atlanta system structure. By working in conjunction with Scientific-Atlanta's multi-processing hardware architecture, the system makes full use of the CPU through multi-tasking functions for real-time data analysis, networking, and graphical display with no degradation of full data collection speed.
 Scientific-Atlanta is a MIMIC (Microwave and Millimeter Wave Monolithic Integrated Circuits) Phase 3 contractor whose charter is to provide enhanced testing equipment for MIMIC devices that will reduce present chip and module test times by at least an order of magnitude.
 The development work is administered by the U.S. Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) a government agency which promotes advanced basic and applied research and development projects.
 MIMIC is a seven-year program supported by ARPA to research and develop applications for Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) integrated circuits in electronic systems operating in the 1 to 100 GHz frequency range. Use of GaAs circuits results in significant size, weight and cost reduction and a simultaneous improvement in reliability and operating speed. MIMIC research and development will also support a strong GaAs technology base which will eventually lead to the introduction of MIMIC devices to commercial products.
 Electronic Systems Division is the first unit within Scientific-Atlanta to receive ISO 9001 certification. ISO 9001 is the emerging worldwide total quality standard set by the International Organization for Standardization.
