SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF HEADEND AND AMPLIFIER PRODUCT LINES OF NEXUS ENGINEERING

-- Increases lead in U.S. cable TV headend equipment market --
ATLANTA, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA) has completed the acquisition of the headend and amplifier product lines of Nexus Engineering Corp., based near Vancouver, B.C., strengthening Scientific-Atlanta's position as the leader in the U.S. headend equipment market and broadening the potential for international distribution of its digital video compression products.
The acquisition of the product lines of Nexus also increases Scientific-Atlanta's presence in the international SMATV (Satellite Master Antenna Television) and cable markets for analog headend products. The financial terms of the transaction, which was originally announced in early December, were not disclosed.
"This acquisition lengthens our lead in the headend market," said Robert McIntyre, president of Scientific-Atlanta's transmission systems division. "Nexus's strong presence in growing markets abroad, particularly Southeast Asia, the Middle East, South America and Canada, dovetails with Scientific-Atlanta's global strategy in key product areas such as the international SMATV market and digital video compression."
Two management founders of Nexus, Dr. Basil Peters and Peter van der Gracht, have joined Scientific-Atlanta's Broadband management team. Dr. Peters, president of the new Scientific-Atlanta Nexus unit and vice president and general manager of international SMATV products said, "We are proud to now be part of Scientific-Atlanta, the long-time market leader in headend equipment in the United States. Our combined technical and sales forces will enhance Scientific-Atlanta's presence in some of the world's leading growth markets, and broaden its product offerings."
Scientific-Atlanta expects the international SMATV market to grow, as U.S. programmers accelerate their moves into developing countries where much of the population is clustered in apartment complexes. Such highly concentrated populations make up the primary market that SMATV systems serve.
Scientific-Atlanta's new Nexus unit specializes in the manufacture and sale of SMATV and CATV headend products ranging from high-performance 1 GHz equipment to micro for homes. Those products are now being sold in more than 100 countries.
Scientific-Atlanta Inc. is a world leader in broadband communications systems, cable television electronics, satellite-based communications networks and instrumentation for industrial, telecommunications and government applications.
