SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA AND V-CREST EUROPE PROVIDE VOLKSWAGEN GROUP WITH PRIVATE, PAN-EUROPEAN SATELLITE NETWORK

ATLANTA, Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA), and V-Crest Systems Europe today announced they will provide Volkswagen with a private satellite network to link Volkswagen's Wolfsburg, Germany, headquarters with its organizations throughout Europe.
Volkswagen officials said the first phase of the project will target its dealers in eastern Germany, and as many as 300 German dealers will become a part of the network within the next year.
Scientific-Atlanta was chosen as the provider of the new satellite network in partnership with V-Crest Systems Europe, a wholly owned Volkswagen subsidiary that provides a wide range of satellite communications, software products, and project management services.
The dealer locations in eastern Germany were chosen as Volkswagen's first VSAT sites because they have the most critical need. "In many parts of eastern Germany, linking dealers via a terrestrial network is not possible -- because there is little or no telecommunications infrastructure there. Therefore, we decided to bring those remote areas on-line first. Next, we'll expand the VSAT network to dealers throughout Germany and to other major cities across Europe," said Frank T. Berger, general manager of V-Crest Systems.
Private satellite networks, commonly referred to as very small aperture terminal (VSAT) networks, are used by companies and governments worldwide to manage interactive data, broadcast video and audio, and voice communications.
In addition to the VSAT hardware and software at hundreds of sites, a private satellite master station, or hub, will be installed at Volkswagen's Wolfsburg headquarters. Scientific-Atlanta estimated the initial value of the first phase of the Volkswagen network for Scientific-Atlanta will be $2.2 million. Scientific-Atlanta estimates that the completion of the first phase rollout of the network will involve an additional $2.2 million. Installation of the private hub and the initial VSAT sites in Germany has already begun and will be completed over the next several months.
VSAT Strategic Advantages Include Applications, Economics
Thom F. Degnan, director of Scientific-Atlanta's European VSAT business, said Volkswagen will use its new VSAT network to manage data communications among its dealer network, including information on customer service records, parts orders, warranty claims, dealer sales and financial statements, and sales inquiries.
He said the VSAT network is a multi-application communications platform that can provide the delivery of other dealer management applications as well, including: broadcast video for sales training, service training and corporate communications; on-line credit card and check approval; and in-store music.
Degnan said the advantages of VSAT networks, when compared to terrestrial networks, include higher availability, more flexible network management, faster deployment of remote sites, increased throughput, and lower network costs.
X.25 Technology, Network Expertise Were Factors
Berger said V-Crest chose Scientific-Atlanta as the provider of the Volkswagen network after a long selection process.
"Scientific-Atlanta's network expertise, combined with the advantages of their X.25-based VSAT product, distinguished them from other companies."
