SCIENTIFIC MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS, INC. ANNOUNCES SALE

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific Measurement Systems, INC. (SMS) (NASDAQ-OTC: SCMSC) announced today the sale of the first in a new line of Advanced Industrial X-Ray Computed Tomography Systems (CAT-SCAN) to the Materials and Equipment Branch of the NASA- Lewis Research Center in Cleveland. The sales price was not disclosed.
Scientific Measurement Systems, Inc. (SMS) products have a variety of applications using techniques similar to the medical CAT scanner to peer inside complex small parts and materials for detailed inspection and analysis. This new system is the fourth SMS system sold for use by NASA. SMS' first commercial computed tomography system was installed at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in 1985.
The SMS system at NASA-Lewis is the first sale of SMS' SMARTSCAN 100 Series line of products which was developed recently by SMS and provides a 10-fold increase in capability at a lower cost than previous systems. It will be used for advanced structural materials research and development purposes. Noting that the system allows imaging of flaws and characteristics as small as 10 microns, or about one tenth the width of a human hair and significantly lowers inspection costs, Dr. Larry Secrest, SMS president and CEO, said the development of the new system is based on a major breakthrough in detector technology and related software. He indicated that the new series significantly broadens the market for SMS products. He expects rapid acceptance of the new systems by the aircraft, aerospace and materials industries.
SMS is a leading manufacturer of industrial computed tomography and digital radiographic systems for the American and international markets.
