SCHWAB NAMES JOHN N. TOGNINO AS NEW

 SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Charles Schwab Corp. (NYSE: SCH; PSE) today announced the appointment of John N. Tognino to the new position of executive vice president, Trading & Capital Markets, and a member of the management committee, effective Oct. 1, 1993. Based in New York, he will report directly to Ronald W. Readmond, senior executive vice president of the company and chief operating officer of the brokerage subsidiary, Charles Schwab & Co. Inc.
 "John is a recognized industry leader who brings a tremendous depth of trading and capital markets experience to our Management Committee," said Chairman Charles R. Schwab. "He will lead our strategic efforts to further expand our trading activities for retail and institutional clients, while directing operations which include all listed equity and options transactions, and Mayer & Schweitzer's market-making activities." Mayer & Schweitzer currently represents more than 6 percent of Nasdaq trading volume.
 Tognino, 55, has been a managing director at Merrill Lynch in New York since 1991, and from 1988 to 1991, he was based in London as managing director for the equity product. He served as managing director-Unlisted Trading from 1987 to 1988, and prior to that served as managing director of the O.T.C. department, which included agency order, institutional sales trading and market-making, since 1972.
 From 1970 to 1972, Tognino held positions with P.F. Fox in the institutional sales area and at A.G. Becker as vice president/manager- O.T.C. He spent the first 13 years of his distinguished securities career at Merrill Lynch, starting in 1957.
 Among his many professional affiliations, he has served on the Nasdaq Board of Governors, as chairman of the Securities Traders Association and president of the Securities Traders Association of New York. He was named O.T.C. Man of the Year in 1986 and Trader of the Year in 1983. Tognino holds a B.A. degree in economics, summa cum laude, from Fordham University. He is a resident of Westchester County, New York, where for many years he has been very active on the Ardsley/Scarsdale Board of Education.
