The program is conducted in conjunction with City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas' Los Angeles City Council subcommittee helping develop programs to restore South Central communities affected by the recent violence.
The trees, a variety of eight different types ranging three to four feet in height, are being donated to the South Central communities through the Los Angeles Unified School District by Boething Treeland farms and ARCO as part of an outreach program to beautify neighborhoods. A similar planting program that included the donation of 2,000 trees was conducted by Boething Treeland Farms following the Watts riots in the early 1970s.
Selected students at each of the 10 middle schools participating in the program will be given planting instructions and a tree to take home and plant in their own yard or neighborhood. The trees are expected to grow approximately three feet per year.
Principals at each of the participating schools are developing educational themes to help make the tree distribution more meaningful for the students. Schools taking part in the program are: Mt. Vernon, Audubon, Mann, Muir, Foshay, Carver, Edison, Drew, Gompers and Bethune.
The eight tree types being donated are: California Pepper, Brazil Pepper, Magnolia, Glossy Privet, African Sumac, Camphor, Sycamore and Virginia Oak.
The trees are valued at $5 each which includes the cost of transporting them from the tree farm to the various schools. Boething Treeland Farms is donating the trees while ARCO is covering the cost of transporting them to the schools.
