SCHOOL RESTRUCTURING INITIATIVE ANNOUNCED AT 'PRINCIPALS FOR A DAY'
KICKOFF OF EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIP WEEK 1992 IN LOS ANGELES
Educational Partnership Week 1992 - Los Angeles,
"Empowering Schools for Change," March 23-27
/ADVANCE/ LOS ANGELES, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Linking participants in "Principal for a Day" in support of innovative school-based management efforts, seven school-based management sites in the Los Angeles Unified School District today were awarded comprehensive School Restructuring Initiative Grants of management training, technical assistance and funding of up to $10,000 per site at the "Principals Club" Kickoff of Educational Partnership Week 1992 in Los Angeles.
The grants were presented as business executives and school leaders from across Los Angeles gathered at the Biltmore Hotel in preparation for "Principal for a Day" in the opening event of Educational Partnership Week 1992. After learning about their assignments and being sworn in as "principal," more than 120 executives in Los Angeles are scheduled to spend the day on campus on Tuesday, March 24.
Now in its third year, "Principal for a Day" has given hundreds of executives in the Los Angeles area a hands-on opportunity to see how schools run, and to learn how they can effectively support schools in their efforts to run better. The project has created a new level of interest in public education and generated a new level of involvement in support of public schools. This year, in a direct link to "Principals for a Day," the Los Angeles Educational Partnership has recruited expertise and resources from participating companies in support of the School Restructuring Initiative.
"Principal for a Day" has given Los Angeles business and community leaders a basic lesson in how schools run and an up-close view of the difficult job facing teachers and principals. It has helped them to learn about the accomplishments of schools, and has helped them to understand how they can more effectively support schools in their efforts to improve," said Mike Crawford, vice president and general manager of GTE California and chairman of Educational Partnership Week 1992 in Los Angeles.
"This year, in an effort to empower schools for change, we seek to use 'Principal for a Day' as a mechanism for linking community expertise and resources in support of innovative school-based management efforts to improve student achievement through support of the School Restructuring Initiative."
Companies participating in "Principal for a Day" as well as other community organizations, have provided volunteers and resources in support of the initiative, which will provide grants of $10,000, management consulting and technical assistance to selected schools.
Educational Partnership Week is a project of the Los Angeles Educational Partnership and is sponsored by GTE California. The event is held in conjunction with the Los Angeles Unified School District, United Teachers Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Office of Education.
