SCHOOL OF TROPICAL MEDICINE'S THREE DEADLIEST REPTILES.

MAMBAS THE mamba is found in Africa south of the Sahara.

It is a member of the cobra family but, unlike its relations,it does not have a hood.

The green mamba can grow to more than 1.5m long.

It lives in trees, feeding on birds and lizards.

The black mamba is the largest venomous snake. It can be as long as 3.4mand spends more time on the ground.

It can move at a speed of 7mph, fast enough to catch up to a human on foot.

EASTERN DIAMONDBACK RATTLESNAKE ONE of the larger species of rattlesnake, the eastern diamondback is common to the arid south western United States.

It is considered one of the world's largest and most dangerous snakes.

The diamondback mainly feeds on small rodents, rabbits, birds and almost anything alive that can be swallowed whole.

Because of its wide distribution, it accounts for more serious and fatal snake bites than any other snake.

CARPET VIPER WITH a maximum length of 70cm, the carpet viper lives in the mountains.

It is slightly stockier and a little more col ourful than the widespread saw-scaled viper, from which it can only be distinguished by counting the rows of facial shields under its eyes. The carpet viper also has diagonal scales, which produce a hissing noise when it rasps the sides of its body together.

It can also move in side-winding undulations if it encounters soft sand.
