 SCHMITT NAMED RUBBERMAID CEO
WOOSTER, Ohio, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Rubbermaid Incorporated

(NYSE: RBD) today announced that Wolfgang R. Schmitt, currently president and chief operating officer, has been elected chief executive officer and co-chairman of the board of directors. The Rubbermaid board also elected as co-chairman Stanley C. Gault, who will serve during a transitional period. Gault is former chairman of Rubbermaid, now chairman of the board and chief executive officer of The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. He is currently a Rubbermaid board member.
Schmitt succeeds Walter W. Williams, 58, who, for personal reasons, has resigned as chairman of the board, chief executive officer and director. Williams will retire at year-end.
Rubbermaid's board expressed its full support of Schmitt stating that his various functional assignments and broad experience in the company's markets and businesses are unique strengths to continue building on the company's successful growth pattern. It also cited Rubbermaid's strong management team and exceptional financial position as key reasons for the company's superior performance which continues in this challenging economic period.
Schmitt, 48, was elected president and chief operating officer in 1991, having been executive vice president and a director of the corporation since 1987. He served as president and general manager of the Home Products Division, Rubbermaid's largest operating unit, from 1984 until 1987. He previously was vice president of marketing and director of research and development of the division. He joined Rubbermaid in 1966.
Schmitt has been responsible for numerous marketing and management innovations which have contributed significantly to the company's strong performance. Among his contributions have been Rubbermaid's drive to create partnerships with all its constituencies, its trend-based model for product and technology development, and its continuous value-improvement process.
Commenting upon his election to CEO, Schmitt said, "I sincerely appreciate the board's confidence and look forward to leading this great organization. We are fortunate to have talented and experienced management and exceptionally dedicated associates who truly function as a team. Together, I know we can continue the consistent performance which has become Rubbermaid's hallmark."
Schmitt continued, "We want to convey our appreciation to Walt Williams for his contributions to Rubbermaid over these past five years."
