SCHLUMBERGER HIRING 25 NEW ENGINEERS; REFLECTS STRONG GROWTH OF COMPANY IN ATE MARKET

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Schlumberger Technologies, ATE Division, held an open house March 4 to hire engineers -- lots of engineers. And according to Michael Rahaim, director of personnel for Schlumberger, the response was tremendous. More than 100 engineers lined the walkway to get into Schlumberger's facility at 1601 Technology Drive in San Jose. The lure? More than 25 new positions available for experienced engineers -- digital, analog, software and hardware.
"We believe we're one of the very few companies in the Valley hiring engineers," said Rahaim, "particularly so many at once." The available new positions reflect not only the warming of the economy, but particularly Schlumberger's excellent growth over the last two years. The company, which is a division of $6 billion parent, Schlumberger Ltd. (NYSE: SLB), has experienced a growth in revenues of 30 percent since 1991, as well as a significant increase in market share. And this in a market considered one of the most depressed in the high-technology arena.
Schlumberger attributes its continued growth, even in a recession, to its substantial commitment to research and the development of advanced test and diagnostic technologies, both hardware and software. Schlumberger ATE shares in a research budget that exceeds $400 million a year. This technology edge was a major attraction to the members of the engineering community who attended the open house and/or sent resumes. One attendee stated, "Finding employment that you're really suited for by education and experience is like trying to make the Dream Team. That's why I was so excited by Schlumberger's openings." Another guest identified himself as a "casualty of the defense industry," and remarked, "I want to go into a more commercial arena. Schlumberger seems like the ideal combination of advanced technology and commercial focus."
The positions for which Schlumberger is advertising are music to the ears of many Bay Area professionals. Software and applications engineers; analog and digital hardware engineers; engineers in bipolar, analog and digital design; and mechanical engineers will all be joining Schlumberger in the weeks ahead. No position calls for less than three years experience and most require more. "We're looking for the top technical talent in Silicon Valley -- the best and the brightest," said Rahaim. "We've already received more than 700 resumes."
New engineers will be assigned to such projects as the development of the ITS 9000 family of VLSI test systems which introduced an advanced sequencer-per-pin architecture and new software technology to the industry. Other engineers will help design new generations of Schlumberger's popular e-beam and ion-beam systems which command the world market in VLSI diagnostics.
Schlumberger Technologies' ATE Division is a world leader in the design and manufacture of automatic test equipment for both semiconductor and board-test markets, including e-beam and FIB diagnostic systems. The company's worldwide network of ATE service and support personnel includes more than 400 people in 100 centers located in 31 countries. Schlumberger Technologies is one of four business groups within Schlumberger Limited, and specializes in electronic measurement and control. The other groups specialize in oil-field services and computer-aided services. Schlumberger Limited is a $6.15 billion company which employs 53,000 people and operates in more than 100 countries.
