SCARED TO DEATH; Eddie, 73, dies after gang fight.

A pensioner may have been frightened to death by yobs, it emerged yesterday.

Police believe the gang hold the key to the tragic death of grandad Eddie O'Neil.

The spritely 73-year-old died of a heart attack after a disturbance in a busy shopping arcade.

Detectives think he was either frightened to death by the morons who terrorised shoppers at Anniesland Cross, Glasgow, or tried to intervene to help a young man who was injured.

Yesterday, DCI Steve O'Brien said: "We know he died from a heart attack but what is of prime importance is to find out what brought this about."

Tragedy struck just after 3.30pm on Monday after the retired carpet fitter travelled a mile from his home in Morion Road to do shopping. Minutes after he arrived, a gang of youths aged between 15 and 19 were involved in a fight outside a florist's shop.

Soon after, Eddie suffered a heart attack and collapsed in the street. He was dead on arrival at hospital.

His distraught wife, Margaret, was too upset to speak at her home yesterday after breaking the news to her daughter in Australia.

A relative said: "Margaret is just so upset. We just cannot understand what happened."
