SCANFONE NOW AVAILABLE IN THE MEMPHIS AREA; TIME-SAVING NEW SERVICE

OFFERS AT-HOME GROCERY SHOPPING, BILL PAYMENT, AND CATALOG ORDERING
MEMPHIS, June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- ScanFone, an innovative home shopping and bill paying system, will be introduced today to Memphis area residents. A technologically enhanced telephone with a standard push button pad, ScanFone can also be used as an ordinary telephone when it is not being employed as an automated ordering and payment service.
ScanFone features a 16-character LED display panel, a magnetic stripe credit card reader and a light pen used to scan bar codes. ScanFone offers customers the means to make everyday tasks such as grocery shopping and bill paying simpler, faster and less expensive.
"This is the ultimate home management system," says William F. Gorog, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of US Order, developer of ScanFone. "ScanFone will change the way we manage daily household jobs in much the same way as the microwave oven, the answering machine and the automatic teller machines at banks did in their day. By reducing the time spent shopping and paying bills while also cutting the costs of travel, postage and check writing, ScanFone will give consumers an unprecedented degree of control over their everyday lives."
ScanFone Goes to Work for Memphis
ScanFone has entered into exclusive agreements to provide subscribers with the first-ever integrated home shopping and bill payment service that does not require a personal computer. In Memphis, these partners are Piggly Wiggly and Shoppers Express.
Piggly Wiggly Shoppers Express will shop and process ScanFone orders from five Piggly Wiggly stores in the Memphis metropolitan area. Home ordering, grocery delivery and customer pick-up are available through these five Piggly Wigglies as well. Bank of America will process the credit card transactions; customer bill payments will be processed through the Federal Reserve System.
Grocery Shopping Has Never Been So Easy
To shop, customers are issued special catalogs from Piggly Wiggly Shoppers Express that feature more than 6,500 popular items listed with their respective bar codes. The catalog offers items from all departments in the supermarket ranging from detergents and paper products to fresh produce and deli.
When ordering through ScanFone, customers enter a personal password to access the system, and select the items and quantities to be purchased by scanning their respective bar codes. After each selection, verification of the item ordered is displayed on the ScanFone LED screen. When the order is complete, customers receive an estimate of the total cost of their order and can then review their selections and make any necessary changes. After this review, they can select to pick- up their order or indicate the day and time of home delivery -- same day or within the next week. Payments can be made by check upon delivery or by swiping a credit card through ScanFone's magnetic stripe reader.
When ScanFone orders are received at the store, the items are selected by professional Piggly Wiggly food shoppers who have been assigned to select the best cuts of meat and the freshest fruits, vegetables and other produce. Refrigerated delivery containers are used to assure the safe storage of food during transport to customers' homes. If, for any reason, an order is unsatisfactory, or if mistakes are made, replacement items will be delivered and/or the customer's account will be credited. Advertised specials are applicable to purchases made through ScanFone, thus guaranteeing that the price paid is the same low price found in the store.
 Convenient Timely Bill Payment
When paying bills, ScanFone issues the customer a personal payment list with a special bar code for each monthly bill including credit cards, utilities, mortgages and installment loans. To make payments, the customer scans the bar code for the bill, verifies it on the display panel, enters the amount to be paid and scans the date of payment. After entering and transmitting the order, bills will be paid on the date specified, and the user's account will be debited accordingly. Each bill payment will be itemized on a customer's monthly bank statement.
"ScanFone offers consumers the freedom to pay their bills when they want to. Not only is this an added convenience, but it also eliminates the possibility of lost checks," says Gorog. "ScanFone replaces the tedious process of writing checks, stuffing envelopes and licking stamps with a streamlined system that puts the user in charge."
 Catalog Shopping
Over the next few months, ScanFone customers will be issued exclusive, bar-coded catalogs from many of the top names in mail-order catalog shopping. Currently, customers in the Memphis area can begin by ordering from PC Flowers, the world's largest electronic florist; Crate & Barrel, the national retailer of home furnishings; and Chef's Catalog, a kitchenware retailer for the culinary aficionado. By the end of the year, ScanFone customers will be able to order from approximately 20 different mail-order companies.
"The beauty of using ScanFone for catalog shopping is that there is no margin for error and you can order items 24-hours-a-day, seven-days- a-week. This automated ordering system reduces the average time spent on mail-ordering to seconds," added Gorog.
 How Much?
The monthly service charge for the complete ScanFone shopping and bill payment system is $9.95. A 60-day money-back guarantee will provide Memphis area customers with a no-risk opportunity to try ScanFone. Piggly Wiggly charges $5 for each grocery delivery and $2.95 for customer pick-up.
"The small monthly cost of the ScanFone service is more than offset by the cost of gasoline, postage and bank charges for checks, not to mention time," says Gorog.
 How to Order ScanFone
To order ScanFone, customers can call 800-876-2099 to sign up over the telephone. During the introduction, consumers will receive information through newspaper and radio advertisements, in-store demonstrations and supermarkets circulars. Within two weeks of sign-up, a ScanFone unit will be sent to customers for convenient installation into existing home and office phone jacks.
 Nationwide Introduction of ScanFone
