SCA expands Asian business.

Swedish hygiene giant SCA has acquired Asian baby diaper maker Drypers for a reported $87 million. Drypers, a market leader in Malaysia and Singapore, reported sales of $73 million last year; other key markets for the producer include Thailand and Philippines. It has been owned by Navis Investment partners, a private-equity company, since 1999. Prior to this, the company was the Asian unit of Drypers, the U.S.-based private label maker that is now a part of Associated Hygienic Products.

The Drypers business will now benefit from SCA's other operations in personal care, which include a number of synergies in the adult incontinence market. Additionally, the venture could lead to the introduction of a feminine hygiene line in the region in the near term. The acquisition increased SCAs sales in Australia and Asia to slightly less than $267 million, of which approximately two-thirds are related to hygiene products.
