SBP: KWSB bills.
Byline: A. Malik - Karachi
THIS refers to the limited authorisation of banks to receive payments of monthly Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) bills inflicted on citizens without service.
The KWSB over the years has been issuing bills of a fixed amount like a tax without the actual provision of water and sewerage services. Law-abiding citizens pay KWSB bills-cum-tax with the hope that one day they will have water and sewerage services in the real sense.
Incidentally, very few banks have been authorised to receive payment for KWSB bills, leaving citizens in a fix. Consumers struggle to find a bank branch which accepts water bills. This makes people suffer physically, mentally and financially.
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has authorised almost all banks to accept all utility bills for the convenience of citizens. However, some banks have been exempted from receiving KWSB bills. As a result, citizens suffer and waste their time and energy.
The SBP should ensure all banks accept KWSB bills at all their branches and take strict action against those who violate its instructions in this regard.
