SBC/LUCENT TO CONDUCT IP CENTREX TRIAL USING 7R/E PACKET.

Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU), Lisle, Ill., will conduct a live Internet protocol (IP) Centrex trial with SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE: SBC) beginning in April 2001, at Lucent's new technology center here.

More than 2,500 product marketing, product development and research employees are expected to participate in the live network trial and will have Internet protocol (IP) phones on their desks, with access to Centrex services using the new packet technology provided by Lucent's 7R/E(TM) Packet Solutions.

The project, which is expected to be one of the largest IP-Centrex deployments, will integrate with ISDN Centrex service provided to employees in the existing Lucent buildings in the Naperville and Lisle area. Lucent's iMerge(TM) Centrex Feature Gateway (CFG) will provide the IP Centrex functionality in the new facility.

"This IP trial with SBC is an important milestone since it will be conducted in a live network and a real business environment," said Frank D'Amelio, president of Lucent's Switching Solutions Group. "The 7R/E Packet Solutions will offer powerful new ways to deliver the applications their customers are demanding, including multilocation Centrex, virtual office features, seamless work environments for teleworkers and virtual call centers."

Lucent's iMerge gateway offers important benefits to SBC, including the ability to extend current features of multivendor class 5 switches over an IP network. The gateway combines the inherent reliability of the public switched telephone network with the cost-saving advantages of a packet network.

The iMerge platform extends rich feature functionality from any GR303-equipped central-office switch to H.323 endpoints while preserving the full operational infrastructure of that switch, including SS7, billing, OAM&P (operations, administration, maintenance and provisioning) trunking, CALEA (Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act) and other functionality. It also uses a standards-compliant interface to one of the world's most complete set of VoIP endpoints, allowing a superior variety of end-user applications.
