SAWICKI TO HEAD NEW HOUGHTON MIFFLIN CHILDREN'S LIST
THIRD IMPRINT TO JOIN CLARION, HOUGHTON MIFFLIN JUVENILE
BOSTON, April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Norma Jean Sawicki, former president of Orchard Books, will join Houghton Mifflin (NYSE: HTN) to launch a new children's book imprint, Joseph A. Kanon, executive vice president and director of Houghton Mifflin Company's Trade & Reference Division announced today. The new imprint joins Houghton Mifflin's two children's lists, Clarion and Houghton Mifflin Juvenile Books.
Sawicki, a cofounder of Orchard in 1986, had previously served as publisher of Bradbury Press and director of children's books for Crown.
Children's books have been the cornerstone of our publishing program at Houghton for sometime," Kanon said, "a source of pride to the company and of extraordinary growth. That growth has been sustained by having the highest quality books and we're committed to keeping that level of quality as we expand for the future."
The new imprint, which is not yet named, is expected to publish its first list in 1993 and to grow to 50 to 60 titles per year. "Norma Jean's impressive track record in publishing superb children's books speaks for itself," Kanon continued. "She has that rare combination of editorial sensitivity, marketing savvy, and solid business sense that makes a first-rate publisher. She is simply one of the best in the field and we are excited about having her start this new venture with us. Her books are the kind we know how to publish best, so this is a very comfortable fit all around. I think that having this third imprint, along with Walter Lorraine's Houghton Juvenile and Dorothy Briley's Clarion Books, will put Houghton at the very forefront of children's book publishing in the years to come."
Sawicki and her staff will be located in Houghton's New York offices. Clarion Books is also located in New York. Houghton Mifflin Juvenile books is based in Boston.
"It is with great sorrow that I leave Orchard books and all of my friends there, but I have long admired Houghton Mifflin's style and independent spirit and I am very excited about returning to a trade publishing environment," said Norma Jean Sawicki.
Houghton Mifflin is a leading publisher of textbooks, software, and other educational materials for the elementary and secondary school and college markets, as well as an extensive line of reference publications, business software, and fiction and non-fiction for adult and young readers.
