SARA LEE C.E.O. URGES NAFTA APPROVAL
/ADVANCE/ NEW YORK, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- "Free trade is one of

those few examples of an economic policy under which -- over the long term -- everybody can be a winner." Sounding a call for improved global trade relations, John H. Bryan, chairman and CEO of Sara Lee, Inc., a major worldwide corporation, and chairman of the board of Governors of the European American Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C. opened the inaugural lecture of the Chamber's annual "Executive Lecture Series."
Addressing an audience of top executives of some of the world's leading multinationals gathered for luncheon at New York's Pierre Hotel, Bryan described the Sara Lee vision of the opportunities for growth that existed in the world with particular emphasis on Europe and Latin America. He stressed that any company with aspirations to grow had to move aggressively in the global area.
"An economically united Europe is the world's largest market place," Bryan said. Referring to the differences that have risen as to the approval of the Maastricht treaty, he commented,"with or without Maastricht we see continued and complete commitment to free trade in the European Community."
Despite the superficial differences that inevitably surface in an election year, Bryan anticipates that NAFTA will be adopted regardless of who wins the election. He contended that the U.S. economy could only experience sound growth by the addition of a consuming public or the continued improvement of productivity and not, as it had during the past decade, by the massive accumulating of debt in all sectors of society -- corporations, consumers, and government.
The problem of the accelerated trend towards the movement of industrial jobs from the United Sates to Latin America must be recognized and dealt with. Bryan noted that the loss of some industrial jobs will obviously cause dislocation and hardship for a number of American workers. Here is where government and industry must spend time and resources to train dislocated workers and ease the inevitable pain. In the long run, the economy of the United States will benefit since we are becoming overwhelmingly an economy of service and technology.
Bryan concluded that neither Americans, Europeans, or Third World nations could win the global marketplace with a vision of an economic model that belonged to the past.
The European-American Chamber of Commerce in Washington D.C. Inc. was organized in 1990 by a group of U.S. corporations of European parentage and American companies interested in doing business in the European Community. The mission of the Chamber was to give transatlantic business interests a united voice in urging a lessening of trade barriers that impeded international trade. Gerrit Jeelof, chairman of the board of the E.C. Chamber on introducing the speaker urged those in attendance who are not members to, contact President Willard Berry at the Chamber's office, 801 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW in Washington, D.C., telephone 202-347-9292.
