 SANTA SENDS CHILDREN OFF TO THE POLLS;
 KIDS CAST VOTES TO SELECT BEST NEW TOYS IN TOY DECISION '92
 BETHEL, Conn., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Election Day will come early for children attending YMCA after-school programs across the country. Youths nationwide are registered to vote for this season's best new toys when they participate in the Fifth Annual Duracell Kids' Choice National Toy Survey(SM). The toy survey is designed to provide parents and grandparents with a list of kid-approved toys with long-lasting play value.
 For a two-week period beginning today, children will be playing with 30 new toys, many of them not yet available in stores. On Friday, Oct. 2, the tiny testers will vote for their favorites, and share with the rest of the nation what they liked best about the toys and why.
 "Duracell's national toy survey, now in its fifth year, gives holiday shoppers a kids'-eye-view of toys their youngsters will love because they've been chosen by the experts -- children," says Jim Donahue, Duracell's director of corporate communications. "Duracell's list will provide parents with toys their children will enjoy long after the holidays," he adds.
 More than 600 children attending 30 YMCA after-school programs throughout the country are simultaneously play-testing for the toy survey. National results will be released in November, and the "kids' picks" will be made available to toy-buyers via a toll-free hotline -- 1-800-BEST TOYS -- beginning Nov. 10 through Dec. 31. Nearly 70,000 calls have been made to the hotline since its inception in 1990.
 All toys used in the survey will remain at the YMCA sites after the survey is complete.
 "The YMCA after-school center network is proud to be associated with Duracell's toy survey for the fifth consecutive year," says Ken Vogt, YMCA's Child Care Program Associate. "It's a fun and innovative program to kick off the school year and it provides the YMCA centers with toys we may not otherwise be able to afford," he adds.
 The 30 toys being tested, the largest sample ever assembled for the survey, were recommended by independent toy consultant Ruth Roufberg. Roufberg chose toys that stimulate creativity and have long-lasting play appeal from thousands of new toys exhibited during the 1992 American International Toy Fair, held last February in New York.
