SANTA FE RAILWAY COMPLETES SALE OF KANSAS AND OKLAHOMA BRANCH LINES

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway announces it completed its largest branch line sale in terms of miles when it closed the sale of approximately 887 miles in Kansas and Oklahoma to Central Kansas Railway, Inc., on Dec. 31, 1992. Central Kansas is a subsidiary of The Broe Companies, Inc., a Denver-based holding company.
"We are pleased with the expeditious closing of a transaction this size. The entire transaction was negotiated and closed in 60 days. I believe this bodes well for a good working relationship in the future," said Carl Ice, vice president-administration for Santa Fe Railway. "We will coordinate our operating and marketing efforts to provide quality service to Kansas and Oklahoma rail customers."
The new railroad will operate in 28 counties in Kansas and Oklahoma. Service will be provided to approximately 150 shippers and receivers in the two states. Stephen P. Selby, president, Central Kansas, said, "We intend to be an aggressive, service-oriented railroad always in search of new and better ways to serve the public. Our operating plan includes a marketing partnership with Santa Fe as well as the development of new rail business on the lines."
The rail operations of The Broe Companies is the fastest growing and currently third largest Class III shortline railroad in the country. The Santa Fe transaction comes on the heels of its 1992 acquisition of Chicago West Pullman Transportation Corp., a six-railroad holding company, including the Kansas Southwestern Railway Co. "We ended the year with a significant acquisition and expect to increase our activity in 1993," said Vice-President Dwight Johnson.
Terms of the deal were subject to a confidentiality agreement and were not available.
