 SANMARK-STARDUST REPORTS THIRD QUARTER RESULTS
NEW YORK, May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Sanmark-Stardust Inc. (AMEX: SMK)

today reported results for the third quarter and nine months ended March 31, 1992.
For the third quarter ended March 31, 1992, sales amounted to $23,985,000 vs. sales of $24,614,000 during the third quarter ended March 31, 1991. During the recently ended third quarter the company incurred a net loss of $736,000, or $.05 per share, as compared to a net loss of $270,000, or $.02 per share, in the same period a year ago.
For the nine months ended March 31, 1992, sales totaled $95,167,000, compared to sales of $94,630,000 during the nine months ended March 31, 1991. Net income during the first nine months of fiscal 1992 increased to $1,204,000, or $.08 per share, from net income of $1,092,000, or $.07 per share, during the first nine months of fiscal 1991.
Mark M. David, chairman of Sanmark-Stardust, noted that the loss incurred during the third quarter stemmed primarily from the company's plants operating at less than capacity, which resulted in an inability to absorb fixed manufacturing overhead costs. "The decrease in overall domestic plant activity," said David, "was due, in part, to the company's increased use of imports and offshore facilities. Additionally, we have continued to realign and upgrade our domestic facilities, as well as seek new ways to reduce excess capacity. Included is the planned conversion of our Petersburg, Pa. facility into a distribution center and the shift of its manufacturing operations to our Mississippi facilities. While our excess manufacturing capacity has had a negative impact on profitability, we expect the actions being taken to result in meaningful cost savings over the long term through the more efficient utilization of our total manufacturing capacity.
"As a result, we do not believe our third quarter results are indicative of future results. Overall, we are confident that we have taken those steps necessary to improve operating efficiency and position the company to take advantage of future opportunities. Based on current indications, we are optimistic about our prospects for fiscal 1993."
