SANDOZ PHARMACEUTICALS ANNOUNCES MANAGEMENT INITIATIVE

EAST HANOVER, N.J., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corporation announced today it has launched a management initiative that will refocus and reshape the company. The objective is to meet the opportunities and challenges of the new health-care marketplace.
Timothy G. Rothwell, President and CEO, said functional management teams are examining all aspects of the company. They will make recommendations for strategic and organizational changes by the end of the first quarter of 1994.
The initiatives will include, Rothwell said, voluntary early retirements, the elimination of some positions, and personnel retraining and reassignment.
He also said the company could not estimate how many positions would be affected until the analysis is completed. Rothwell said he expected that fewer individuals will be affected at Sandoz compared to recent personnel announcements made by other pharmaceutical companies. This is because Sandoz anticipated many of the changes now taking place in the marketplace and has kept staff increases over the last several years to a minimum. Mr. Rothwell also emphasized that the company's strong R&D commitment will not be reduced.
During the last year the company has done an extensive job of cutting costs and streamlining business practices, according to Rothwell. This new initiative goes beyond these steps because it examines the essential strategic and organizational structure of the company, he said.
Rothwell said that while the final shape and form of health care has not yet been determined, increased government regulations and managed health-care forces are already having a significant economic impact on Sandoz and the rest of the industry.
"No company is immune to the changes facing business in the 1990s and beyond, particularly a company in the pharmaceutical industry," said Rothwell. "To be a successful company and a continuing contributor to progress in health care we need a planned approach that can guide our company through the new environment."
Rothwell said Sandoz has been communicating with its employees about the challenges facing the company and industry for six months. He said he realized the current review would cause some employees to be concerned about their future and, so, the company has established several employee communication services that will keep personnel informed and allow employees to speak directly with senior management on an on-going basis.
Headquartered in East Hanover, NJ, Sandoz Pharmaceuticals in a leader in the research, development, marketing and manufacturing of prescription and over-the-counter medications. The company focuses in the areas of transplantation, mental illness, Parkinson's disease, headache and other forms of pain management.
