SANDOZ ANNOUNCES ANNUAL RESULTS AND FIRST QUARTER 1992 SALES
BASLE, Switzerland, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- At the press conference which was held today at the headquarters of Sandoz Ltd. in Basle to announce the annual results, the key figures for the 1991 business year were presented.
Despite a difficult economic climate, Sandoz had a good year in 1991. Group turnover rose by 9 percent, cash flow by 13 percent and profit by 15 percent. At Sfr. 1,114 million, profits broke the one billion franc barrier for the first time in the company's history.
Thus, the sustained improvement shown by Sandoz over the last few years has been continued. Since 1986, turnover has risen by 60 percent, cash flow by 100 percent and profits by 106 percent.
The net profit of Sandoz Ltd., Basle, increased by 25 percent to Sfr. 289 million. The board of directors will propose to the annual general meeting on May 13, 1992, that a dividend of Sfr. 35 per share and bearer participation certificate be distributed. Thanks to the dividend policy pursued by Sandoz, shareholders have been able to benefit fully from the company's success. This will continue to be the case in the future.
In the course of the press conference, special emphasis was placed on the important role that will be played by biotechnology and genetic engineering in the healthcare sector, in agriculture and the chemical industry in general. Some applications of these new technologies in the medical field were illustrated with reference to SyStemix, Inc. (USA), in which Sandoz has a 60 percent stake.
The good results achieved by Sandoz in 1991 were maintained in the first quarter of 1992. Turnover was Sfr. 4,107 million, 17 percent above the year-back figure. In local-currency terms, this growth rate came to 9 percent.
