SAN FRANCISCO PRICES FELL 0.1 PERCENT IN DECEMBER -- UP 1.9 PERCENT IN 1993

 SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumer prices in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area declined 0.1 percent in December, according to Regional Commissioner Sam Hirabayashi of the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. He said that declines in the transportation and apparel and upkeep categories more than offset increases in four other major expenditure categories, while the miscellaneous goods and services category was unchanged. He added that the 1.9 percent over-the-year increase was the smallest December to December rise in the Bay Area since prices were unchanged for the year ending December 1982. Local area prices are not seasonally adjusted.
 The 10-county Bay Area All items Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (1982-84 equals 100) dropped to 147.0 in December, 1.9 percent above December 1992 levels. Local prices had advanced 3.5 percent and 3.2 percent in the years ending December 1991 and December 1992 respectively.
 Local transportation costs fell 1.0 percent last month as gasoline prices dropped 3.5 percent and the public transportation index, which includes airline fares, declined 0.2 percent. When compared to December 1992 levels, gasoline prices were down 8.7 percent, the public transportation component was up 7.0 percent, and overall transportation costs rose a moderate 0.2 percent.
 The volatile apparel and upkeep category decreased 3.2 percent last month as there were price declines of 5.5 percent in women's and girls' apparel, 2.2 percent for men's and boys' apparel, and 1.7 percent for footwear. When compared to year-ago levels, there were decreases of 5.0 percent in the index for men's and boys' apparel, 2.2 percent in price tags for women's and girls' apparel, and 0.1 percent in the cost of footwear. The overall apparel and upkeep index fell 0.8 percent from December 1992 to December 1993.
 The food and beverages category rose 0.7 percent in December as grocery prices (food at home) rose 1.2 percent, the cost of eating out edged up 0.1 percent, and the index for alcoholic beverages increased 0.3 percent. Grocery prices rose despite declines of 1.9 percent in the cost of cereals and bakery products and 1.5 percent in the index for meats, poultry, fish and eggs. Prices for dairy products rose 2.2 percent last month while the cost of fruits and vegetables soared 8.1 percent. The overall food and beverages category rose 1.5 percent from December 1992 to December 1993.
 The cost of housing edged up 0.1 percent last month as the cost of shelter rose 0.1 percent, the index for fuel and other utilities declined 0.1 percent, and the cost of household furnishings and operation rose 0.3 percent. Local housing costs rose 2.1 percent from December 1992 to December 1993.
 The local cost of medical care rose 5.7 percent over-the-year after increasing 0.2 percent in December. The entertainment index rose 0.2 percent last month and this index was 4.1 percent above December 1992 levels. The other goods and services category was unchanged last month despite a decline of 1.0 percent in the cost of personal care.
