SAN FRANCISCO BUSINESS TIMES NAMES S.F. GIANTS PRESIDENT PETER A. MAGOWAN BAY AREA EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The San Francisco Business Times has announced that Peter A. Magowan, president and managing partner of the San Francisco Giants baseball club, has been named Bay Area Executive of the Year.
Magowan becomes the first recipient of this newly created distinction bestowed upon the business executive who, for better or worse, had the most significant impact on the Bay Area during the past year.
"To some he is St. Peter, a savior to a city. To others, merely a self-indulgent millionaire who to this day carries boyhood scars from when the New York Giants abandoned the Polo Grounds for San Francisco," the Business Times reports in a page 1 profile, appearing in the Jan. 7-Jan. 13 issue of the weekly business newspaper.
Magowan, 51, earned the Bay Area Executive of the Year Award for the leadership he showed in keeping the Giants in San Francisco. In an 11th-hour scramble, Magowan, then chief executive officer of Oakland-based Safeway Inc., structured the $100 million purchase of the Giants through an investor group consisting of some of the area's most prominent business leaders, sparing San Francisco the indignity of becoming the first city in 21 years to lose a Major League Baseball team.
Since then, he has exercised his business savvy to resurrect the Giants and transform the team into contenders in a pennant race that came down to the last day of the season.
His hands-on management style helped produce impressive stats in 1993, including team-record ticket sales of 2.6 million, compared to 1.8 million in 1992, and a $1 million profit, compared to a $11 million loss of the previous year.
Magowan was also cited for his dramatic impact on San Francisco's economics, its image in the world and its sense of civic pride.
"Magowan wheeled, dealed and saved a Bay Area cultural institution," said Business Times Publisher Mary Huss. "And he did it as a business leader."
