SAN DIEGO TROLLEY'S NEXT MILESTONE -- 100 MILLIONTH RIDER
SAN DIEGO, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- On Thursday, Feb. 20, the San Diego Trolley will have achieved another milestone -- its 100 millionth rider!
According to statistics gathered by SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments), the 100 millionth rider will board the San Diego Trolley on the morning of Feb. 20 from the Imperial & 12th Transfer Station. The San Diego Trolley, Inc., along with Z90 FM Radio, will celebrate this milestone on the radio with special gifts for the lucky rider to show its appreciation for close to 11 years of support, and the 100 million riders who have helped make the San Diego Trolley "America's Finest."
"The trolley has reached this 100 million passenger mark before projections said we would -- and long before our critics said we could!" said San Diego county supervisor, and San Diego Trolley Board Chairman, Brian Bilbray. "And thanks to every commuter, tourist, student, and shopper who uses the trolley, it is the most successful light rail system in the country!"
The San Diego Trolley began operation on July 26, 1981, with the opening of the South Line, which runs from Centre City San Diego to the International Border at San Ysidro. At that time, average daily ridership was projected to be about 9,500. In reality, the trolley was carrying over 11,000 passengers a day during its first few months of operation, and since that time its ridership has exceeded projections year after year. Today the trolley is carrying over 47,000 passengers a day! It has been called San Diego's moving landmark and a boon to both tourists and commuters.
"The success of the San Diego Trolley, and the reason we've carried 100 million satisfied riders, is because everyone at San Diego Trolley, Inc. is dedicated and determined to make this the best light rail system," said San Diego Trolley, Inc. President and General Manager Langley Powell. "We focus on quality, safety, and cleanliness, which encourages more people to leave their personal vehicles and ride with us!"
The San Diego Trolley has passed many milestones in the last 10-1/2 years:
-- The South Line opened on time and under budget, and was built without federal funds.
-- The San Diego Trolley was the first new light rail system built in the United States since World War II.
-- By its 10th year of operation, San Diego Trolley was recovering almost 90 percent of its operating costs from the fares -- most transit properties only recover between 30-55 percent of their operating costs through fares.
-- The first part of the East Line, from Centre City San Diego to Euclid Avenue, opened on time and under budget in 1986.
-- The next segment of the East Line, from Euclid to El Cajon, opened on time and under budget in June 1989.
-- The Bayside portion of the East Line, operating in a loop in Centre City San Diego, opened on time and under budget in June 1990.
-- Opening to County Administration Building/Little Italy, and Santee in 1994, Old Town 1995.
-- Plans to keep the trolley system expanding over the next 20 years with lines heading north from Old Town to University City and east through Mission Valley.
-- Additional lines are under study for the Otay Mesa area, the Beach communities, I-15, and Mira Mesa.
And now, the San Diego Trolley's next milestone, the 100 millionth rider! "The sky's the limit, where the trolley is concerned," said Powell. "We're looking forward to carrying our next 100 million passengers!"
