SAN DIEGO ARCHITECT DESIGNING BARSTOW STATE VETERANS HOME

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Gov. Pete Wilson today announced that further progress has been reported on the Southern California Veterans Home project.
The San Diego architectural firm of Sillman, Wyman Inc. is completing the design of the veterans home facility slated for Barstow.
Sillman, Wyman is renowned in the Southwest for design of continuing care retirement facilities providing multiple levels of care such as the Barstow home.
The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CDVA) is reviewing the design for compliance with regulations and requirements of the state and the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
Project Director Tom Langley said that CDVA hopes to meet all administrative and fiscal requirements in time to commence construction in late 1993 or early 1994.
"All common rooms and many of the living spaces will be designed to take advantage of the view to the north over the adjacent college campus and to the hills beyond," according to Langley, who said, "Some skilled nursing and intermediate care wing rooms will have a view to the east over rolling vistas leading to Calico Ghost Town and Las Vegas.
Langley noted other design characteristics as follows:
-- A central core building with two attached wings. One wing will be for skilled nursing for 60 residents and the other wing will be for intermediate care for 120 residents. The wings will be attached with courtyards and enclosed connecting corridors.
-- Four domiciliary buildings accommodating 220 residents will include a fitness center and an arts and crafts center located adjacent to the core building. All structures will be single story buildings.
-- The core building will incorporate medical and administrative areas. A main dining room, multipurpose room, coffee shop-lounge, chapel and retail store will adjoin the entrance lobby to the core building. An atrium will complement the entrance lobby.
