 SAMUEL MOORE WALTON DIES
BENTONVILLE, Ark., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Samuel Moore "Sam"

Walton, chairman of the board and founder of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT), died today at University Hospital of Arkansas in Little Rock as a result of complications from his long bout with cancer. He was 74-years-old. Under Mr. Walton's leadership, Wal-Mart has assembled an outstanding group of associates who have joined with him in his dedication to serve Wal-Mart's customers everywhere, growing to over 2,000 operating units with a sales volume in excess of $43.8 billion last year.
Although Mr. Walton remained a dominating force in Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and all of retailing, he had previously taken a step back from the day-to-day management in 1988. He had assembled the current management group, lead by David D. Glass, Wal-Mart's president and chief executive officer, to assume the company's leadership.
 S. Robson Walton, speaking on behalf of the Walton family, which holds approximately 38 percent of the outstanding common stock of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., stated that no changes are expected in the corporate direction, control or policy of the company as a result of Mr. Walton's death. He also stated that no family sales of Wal-Mart shares will be necessitated by reason of Mr. Walton's death.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Arkansas Cancer Research Canter or the First Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund for Missions. Accounts have been established at the Bank of Bentonville, P.O. Box 1229, Bentonville, Ark. 72712. The family has also requested a private service.
Wal-Mart operates in a 43 state trade territory and its securities are listed on the New York and Pacific stock exchanges.
