SAMUEL GOLDWYN THEATRE GROUP ACQUIRES 18 SCREENS IN BERKELEY, CALIF.
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- In a transaction which complements and strengthens its operations in Northern California, The Samuel Goldwyn Co.'s Theatre Group has reached agreement to acquire 5 locations with a total of 18 screens in the Berkeley, Calif. area. With well-established operations in San Francisco and Palo Alto, this acquisition will maximize promotional opportunities and operating efficiencies in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the strongest and most sophisticated movie going areas in the United States. Samuel Goldwyn Theatre Group President Steve Gilula said: "As the premier operator of specialized urban theatres in the United States, it is exciting to grow in another city which has proven to have a very strong audience for the films on which we focus. Berkeley, with its great university and its diverse population is an ideal fit for our circuit which has operated the UC Theatre in Berkeley, one of the foremost specialty theatres in the country, since 1976." The acquisition which is expected to close in January 1994, will bring the total number of screens operated by the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre Group to 118.
