The European Commission cleared on 30 March the proposed acquisition of the South Korean camera manufacturer Samsung Digital Imaging Co, Ltd (SDIC), by Samsung Electronics Co, Ltd (SEC), the South Korean consumer electronics producer. The proposed transaction will result only in vertical effects with regard to two types of memory semiconductors: Dynamic Random Access memory semiconductor chips (DRAM) and flash memories. However, the Commission found that the merger would not limit access to memory semiconductors for other manufacturers of digital cameras considering the presence of a sufficient number of competitors on this market and the fact that memory semiconductors can be used in various applications outside cameras.
