SAMSUNG DEVELOPS WORLD'S FIRST 64-MEGA DRAM
SEOUL, Korea, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Samsung Group, the

world's 18th largest corporation, today announced its Samsung Electronics (SEC) division has developed the world's first prototype (test sample) of the 64-mega DRAM (dynamic random access memory) -- after four years of testing. SEC's 64M DRAM has a circuit density four times higher than the 16-mega DRAM.
Samsung plans to begin production of the engineering sample (pilot plant production) in early 1994 and predicts that the chips will be available on the world market in 1995 for an estimated unit price of US$600.
SEC's 64M DRAM is made with CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) processing technology and a design rule of .35 microns. By developing this technology, Samsung is now closer to developing .25- micron technology, the technology necessary for developing 256-mega DRAMs.
According to a Samsung company spokesman, "The 64M DRAM prototype has 6.8 million cells and can hold 8 million Roman letters -- a total of 512 regular newspaper pages. This device will be used in a wide variety of high-tech products including workstations, personal and super computers, office and factory automation, and high definition TVs."
SEC anticipates that the world demand for this chip will rise sharply, from an estimated US$7 million in 1995 to US$330 million in 1996 and US$2.1 billion in 1997.
Samsung Electronics Co., the world's fifth largest electronics company, is comprised of four divisions: Samsung Semiconductor, Samsung Information Systems, Samsung Consumer Electronics and Samsung Computer & Global Systems. It employs 45,900 people worldwide and operates a global network of 62 specialized manufacturing plants, R&D facilities, and sales and marketing offices.
In 1991, Samsung Electronics' revenues totalled $6.95 billion. The Samsung Group's 1991 revenues totalled $43 billion.
