SALVATORI OPHTHALMICS, INC. REPORTS FIRST QUARTER INCOME

SARASOTA, Fla., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Salvatori Ophthalmics, Inc. (NASDAQ: EYES) today reported results of operations for the period ended March 31, 1994. For the first quarter of 1994, the Company earned a net profit of $6,382 on sales of $952,320. This compares to a net loss of $137,681 on sales of $935,255 for the same period in 1993. Sales increased 1.8% in total and is the first-quarter-to-corresponding-prior- years'-quarter-overall sales increase the Company has experienced since 1991. The profit for the quarter is the fourth consecutive quarter of profitable operations for the Company.
Management believes the first quarter profit is the result of cost reduction measures initiated by the Company during 1992 and continued during 1993 into 1994. The Company's operating expenses have been reduced from $542,978 for the 1993 first quarter to $456,996 for the comparable 1994 period. In addition to reduced operating expenses, the Company has increased its gross margins from 46% for the first quarter 1993 to 49% for the 1994 period.
The increased sales volume for the 1994 period is attributed to a strong increase in sales of soft lenses in the soft toric product line, and is in line with reported industry trends. Toric lenses employ a non- spherical surface for correcting astigmatism. The principal market for soft toric lenses is people under the age of 40 who have a substantial degree of astigmatism. The Company's RGP (rigid gas permeable) product line continues to experience the sales declines reported in prior periods. The growth of disposable lenses offered by major manufacturers continues to impact the Company's business.
Management believes the soft toric portion of the contact lens market is poised for future growth because of the number of astigmatic patients who could wear soft contact lenses to correct astigmatism once they become aware that such lenses exist. Management was pleased with the operating results and by putting together four consecutive quarters of profitable operations, the Company now has 12 month trailing earnings of $223,711 or $0.19 per share on $3,963,550 of revenue.
Salvatori Ophthalmics, Inc. is a manufacturer of specialty contact lenses, with manufacturing and administrative facilities located in Sarasota, Florida and Lincoln, Nebraska. The Company is among the largest of such specialty manufacturers, producing toric and bi-toric designs and eight different bifocals or multifocal designs, seven in rigid gas permeable materials and one in soft lens material. In addition, Salvatori produces and markets lenses designed for use in keratoconus, post-keratoplasty, radial keratotomy, pediatric aphakia, and very high degrees of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
