SALES INCREASE 6.2 PERCENT FOR MONTH OF MAY FOR MAY DEPARTMENT STORES
 ST. LOUIS, June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE: MA) today reported preliminary sales increased 6.2 percent to $805.8 million for the four-week period ended May 30. Sales during the similar four-week period last year were $758.5 million.
 Sales for the first four months of fiscal 1992 were $3.10 billion, up 5.9 percent from sales of $2.92 billion during the same period a year ago.
 Department store sales for the month of May were $653.9 million, an increase of 3.4% or $21.7 million from last year. Sales for Payless ShoeSource totaled $151.9 million, up 20.3 percent or $25.6 million.

 during both years.
 Sales have been restated to exclude the sales of stores which have been closed and not replaced. Year-to-date revenues, including sales of nonreplaced closed stores and finance charge revenue, were $3.22 billion in 1992 and $3.12 billion in 1991.
 The May Department Stores Company is the largest department store retailer in the United States, operating 319 department stores and 3,333 Payless ShoeSource stores.
