SALEN LINDBLAD OFFERS THREE VIETNAM CRUISES ON CALEDONIAN STAR
AS U.S. TREASURY EMBARGO IS LIFTED
STAMFORD, Conn., Dec. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The first Vietnam cruises to be offered by an American company in decades were announced today by Salen Lindblad Cruising, the expedition cruise line.
The announcement of three Vietnam cruises in January and February comes just three days after the U.S. Treasury Department lifted its ban on organized travel to Vietnam. The cruises will take place during Southeast Asia's optimum cruising months, bypassing the monsoon season as well as the extreme heat of summer.
The voyages on the 134-passenger M.S. Caledonian Star will commence Jan. 9, 1992, with a cruise from Bali to Bangkok, calling in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), followed by Vietnam coastal cruises from Bangkok and Hong Kong on Jan. 24 and Feb. 3, 1992, respectively. The cruises are part of a program that had been marketed in the United Kingdom prior to Tuesday's announcement that the U.S. embargo was no longer in effect.
According to Yvonne Williams, president of Salen Lindblad Cruising, "There is strong traveler interest in Vietnam and now that the ban has been lifted there is nothing stopping Americans from visiting this fascinating country whose people are as eager to normalize relations as we are. In fact, the only remaining impediment is a lack of tours and cruises in the marketplace.
"We're delighted that the government has finally cleared the way and that Salen Lindblad, which has a history of developing innovative itineraries, is the first American cruise line to reach the market with Vietnam voyages."
The Caledonian Star, whose friendly charm fosters easy camaraderie among passengers, will explore key areas of Vietnam including coastal regions, cities, the Saigon River, Hai Long Bay and the South China Sea.
The Vietnam voyages, accompanied by expert lecturers and guides, will begin in Bali and include visits to Hong Kong and Singapore as follows:
-- 16-day voyage from Bali to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), Jan. 9-24, 1992, calling in Lombok Island, Satonda, Sabalana Island, Pare Pare, Tolitoli, Sandakan, Kinabalu, Brunel and Vung Tau. Prices from $4,690 (air not included).
-- 11-day voyage from Saigon to Hong Kong, Jan. 24-Feb. 3, 1992, calling in Vung Tau, Nha Trang (South China Sea), Da Nang, Haiphong (Hanoi) and Hai Long Bay. Prices from $3,850 (air not included).
-- 16-day voyage from Hong Kong to Singapore, Feb. 3-18, 1992, calling in Hai Long Bay, Haiphong (Hanoi), Da Nang, Nha Trang (South China Sea), Vung Tau and Saigon. Prices from $4,640 (air not included).
Pre- and post-cruise land packages are also available including visits to Cambodia.
The Caledonian Star, equipped with Zodiac landing craft, combines the amenities of a cruise ship with the ambiance of a private club. Features include 68 spacious, outside staterooms, 130-person lecture lounge, swimming pool, sun deck, observation deck, library, single- seating dining and main lounge. Officers are Scandinavian, with Filipino service crew.
