SALE OF HAWAIIAN'S JAPAN ROUTE TO NORTHWEST TENTATIVELY APPROVED

SALE OF HAWAIIAN'S JAPAN ROUTE TO NORTHWEST TENTATIVELY APPROVED
WASHINGTON, Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The Department of Transportation today tentatively approved Hawaiian Airlines' sale of its Honolulu-Fukuoka, Japan, route to Northwest Airlines.
In a show cause order, the department said the transfer would allow Hawaiian to improve its financial position by ending service on an unprofitable route. In allowing Hawaiian to focus on its domestic service, the sale would enhance competition in the domestic airline industry, the department said.
The department added that the U.S. trade position stands to profit from the transfer because it will allow Northwest, a strong and experienced carrier, to compete against Japanese carriers and bring more Japanese visitors to Hawaii.
At the same time, the department tentatively denied the petition of American Airlines to reject the proposed transfer and instead grant its own petition for service between Los Angeles and Nagoya, Japan. The order cited DOT's policy against consolidating an application for new route authority with a route transfer request.
Interested parties have seven days to comment on the show cause order, with three days for answers to comments.
