SAIT ENTERS THE FEDERAL AND COMMERCIAL
 RUGGEDIZED SUN(TM) PORTABLE WORKSTATION MARKET
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) today introduced the RSC-1X Ruggedized SPARC(R) Portable Workstation, engineered for demanding applications where portability and performance require the power of a Sun(TM) workstation. Used in Unix workstation applications that require significant processing speeds, the RSC-1X provides true portability for use in remote field environments. Users can now have the power of a Sun Desk-top in a ruggedized briefcase for use anytime anywhere.
RSC-1X workstations are currently being delivered for ASW, Intelligence and Command and Control Applications. The RSC-1X has also been selected as the Marine Common Hardware Suite Class B transportable workstation.
Standard features of the RSC-1X are a Sun SPARCstation(TM) IPX motherboard with an operating speed of 28.5 MIPS; a color 640 x 480 pixel Active Matrix LCD screen; internal 535 MB removable hard disk drive; one SBus expansion slot; 16 MB DRAM with parity; and an internal 3.5-inch 1.44 MB floppy disk drive all packaged in a rugged "briefcase" configuration.
Under an exclusive agreement with RDI Computer Corp. of San Diego, SAIC utilizes the BriteLite(TM) portable workstation as the basis for its rugged RSC-1X workstation.
SAIC's ruggedization of the BriteLite includes value added enhancements such as a removable 535MB hard disk drive, three-button trackball, high output power supply and an expansion briefcase for SCSI peripherals and VME or SBus interface devices. Options available are: memory expansion up to 64MB, a 1.2GB removable hard disk drive and various I/O alternatives.
Portability for high performance SPARC workstations is required in numerous DoD applications. With actual Sun motherboards incorporated in the system, the RSC-1X is the first 100 percent Sun compatible rugged workstation in a briefcase that meets stringent DoD requirements.
The RSC-1X will be available through the Sun Microsystem's Federal Third Party Offerings (S3PO) program. This allows federal resellers and government end users to procure the product via contractual arrangements they have in place with Sun Microsystems Federal Inc.
SAIC is an employee-owned high technology company with more than 14,000 employees in more than 250 offices worldwide and over $1.28 billion in annual sales. SAIC focuses in the areas of national security, energy, environment and health, and high technology products.
