SAILING: All-action weekend promises to be another winner.

WHEN it comes to dinghy team racing there is nothing quite like the Smart Wilson Trophy Meeting being staged by West Kirby Sailing Club this weekend for the British Championship.

The action in Fireflies on the Marine Lake will come thick and fast from 8am tomorrow. By the time the final is staged on Sunday afternoon more than 200 races will have been completed.

It needs a masterlyact from the organisers to ensure smooth running and in this field West Kirby is second to none, both on and off the water.

A total of 32 teams are in the line-up with many others unable to be accommodated.

America will be fivestrong in their challenge for the title via Boston Black Sheep, Cape Cod Whishbone, New York Yacht Club, Silver Panda and The Ungrateful Colonists.

Representing Ireland will be George Knights, Royal Cork Yacht Club and Royal St George Yacht Club. Among the home challenge will be the New Forest Pirates, Spinnaker All Stars and Magnum among others with a big reputation.

West Kirby have a three strong line-up with their main team backed up by the Hilbre Highlanders and West Kirby Trilogy and they feel there is room for improvement after their effort in the recent United Kingdom Championship staged at the same venue.

All-women teams are represented by the Cambridge Tabby Catsand the British University Sailing Association. Imperial Poona Yacht Club present another overseas challenge and there are various University lineups plus Castaways, Friends of Alice Lyle, Hamble River, Papercourt, Royal Lymington and Team Norfolk.

Spinnaker defend the trophy. They beat New Forest Pirates in the 2004 final.

Unfortunately there is a forecast of deteriorating weather but it will need very strong winds to bring a halt to the proceedings
