SAIC TO OFFER NATIONWIDE CELL-RELAY SERVICES
SAN DIEGO, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Science Applications International

Corp. (SAIC) today announced plans to offer the first implementation of nationwide cell-relay services at DS-3 rates. To be available later in 1992, this X.Lnet(TM) service will offer integrated multimedia capability for synchronous and asynchronous data communications that can be a virtual private or private network. This offering of leading-edge technology is in accord with the High Performance Computing and Communications initiatives.
The X.Lnet service will provide cell-relay based communications service using the WilTel fiber optic transmission network as the backbone, and cell-relay switching systems and customer premise equipment (CPE) from Alcatel, a world-class provider of digital network equipment. SAIC, one of the nation's largest systems integrators, will be the service provider, ensuring reliable end-to-end service and technology upgrades.
"SAIC believes high-speed networking will be the cornerstone of the computing environment of the 1990s and beyond," said Larry Kull, SAIC president and chief operating officer, "and we are committed to providing leading-edge solutions in this area."
"SAIC plans to offer the most technologically advanced cell-relay switched network, providing integrated multimedia service over 802.6 DQDB," said Bob Wilson, vice president and head of SAIC's Integrated Network Systems. "This provides a smooth transition to Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and SONET to develop the sub-network infrastructure for eventual B-ISDN service."
"WilTel has already initiated business plans for the use of SONET in its network," said Roy Wilkens, WilTel president and chief operating officer. "As we led the competition with the introduction of frame relay, it continues to be our goal to lead the industry in the introduction of new telecommunications technologies, products and services."
WilTel was the first interexchange carrier to provide nationwide public frame relay and bandwidth on demand products and services. Alcatel has been on the forefront of synchronous optical network (SONET) and broadband switching research for more than a decade. It was the first to provide an integrated family of SONET transmission products.
With $1.3 billion in annual revenues, SAIC offers high technology systems integration and software development solutions, providing close customer support from some 300 offices worldwide. One of the nation's largest employee-owned firms, SAIC has more than 13,000 employees, who as owners of the company, are committed to providing the highest quality products and services.
An example of SAIC's systems integration and telecommunications expertise is the data communications network SAIC is designing, installing and operating for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Connecting 500 locations nationwide, this network supports 16,000 nodes for the sending and receiving of administrative, medical and data processing information.
WilTel is a full-service telecommunications company that offers data, voice and video products and services nationwide. WilTel owns and operates a nationwide fiber-optic network, one of only four in the United States, with access to more than 30,000 system miles. WilTel provides end-to-end network services, communications equipment, facilities management and maintenance and is the only nationwide fiber- optic network dedicated primarily to business communications services. WilTel has sales and service offices in more than 100 cities nationwide.
