SAIC CAPTURES MOBILE-MINIATURE OPERATIONS CONTROL CENTER (MOCC) CONTRACT

SAN DIEGO, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) has been chosen by the U.S. Navy for the next phase of its Mobile Miniature Operations Control Center (MOCC) program. The three-year requirements contract was awarded in May 1993, by the Naval Electronic Systems' Engineering Activity (NESEA) at St. Inigoes, Md., and is valued at more than $5 million.
The contract, captured by SAIC's Tactical Systems Division after a competitive proposal phase, is for a follow-on effort to provide modified SAIC portable, ruggedized Sun SPARC computer equipment and VME expansion cases. The award includes two option years for both hardware and engineering services.
This award will provide truly portable Sun SPARC computers to the Navy's Anti-Submarine Warfare Operations Centers (ASWOC) for deployment throughout the world. Such installations have previously been forced to choose between portable but low-performance computers and large, bulky, permanently mounted high-performance systems. Now, ASWOC operators are able to have both mobility and the recognized computing power and speed of the Sun SPARC systems.
The Sun portable and VME expansion cases mate together with SAIC's unique "docking" system that provides interconnection and latching, resulting in complete environmental seals between the units. In the docked and latched configuration, the units can be moved from place to place as operational requirements dictate.
"In partnership with Sun Microsystems and RDI Computer Corp., SAIC's Ruggedized Sun Portable Workstation Program has grown in both stature and market application since introduction in April of 1991," said Norm Iverson, director of Business Development for Tactical Systems. The systems are used in a variety of UNIX applications that require significant processing speeds, such as that found in the ASWOC programs, especially where ruggedization is important for field operations. SAIC's ruggedized Sun SPARC portable workstations are now being used in or delivered for ASW, Intelligence and Command and Control applications. The MOCC award further enhances SAIC's position as the industry leader in portable workstation technology. The MOCC award builds on the success of the SPARC portable being established as the Marine Common Hardware Suite Class-B (MCHS-B) standard portable computer for the U.S. Marine Corps. Deliveries commenced in February 1993.
Performance under this contract will be conducted in the company's San Diego facilities. No addition in employment is expected. SAIC is a technical leader and major employer in San Diego and in other major technology locations in the country. SAIC provides high-technology services and products to government and the private sector in the areas of national security, health care, energy, environment, and systems integration. With annual revenues of $1.5 billion, the company has 15,000 employees in 250 locations worldwide. SAIC credits its continuing success to its employee ownership arrangement. SAIC is one of the country's largest employee-owned companies.
