SAIC ACQUIRES RAILROAD SERVICES COMPANY

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC), a $1.5 billion San Diego-based system integration and software development firm, announces the acquisition of the Transportation Division of Video Masters Inc. (VMI-TD) of Kansas City, Mo.
This acquisition will allow SAIC to expand into the rail industry business. VMI-TD's railroad services expertise augments SAIC's existing transportation capabilities in electronic toll collection, intelligent vehicle highway systems and automatic vehicle identification and location. SAIC's transportation group also is heavily focused in the trucking, fleet management and transportation security areas.
VMI's transportation division develops hardware and software for the rail industry using radio frequency-based automatic identification technology to inventory rail cars and their cargo.
"The VMI-TD rail system indentifies and tracks rail cars in much the same way as SAIC identifies and tracks automobiles; the two systems are very synergistic," said Virgil F. Jones, VMI-TD division manager. "We are excited about the increased capabilities and resources we can now offer our customers."
"This acquisition completes the transportation picture for SAIC," said SAIC Senior Vice President Craig Cummings. "This industry is poised for rapid expansion because of needed investment in infrastructure. We now have the capability to globally track cargo through various transportation modes; for example, rail trucking, air and sea," he added.
SAIC has been developing, installing and operating advanced transportation systems and technologies since 1983. The company, which is one of the nation's largest employee-owned high-tech firms, employs 15,000 people in 250 locations worldwide.
